This project is creating a unique fusion of Baroque and Arabic music. Combining oriental instruments and the universal language of music, the Doha Baroque Ensemble steps into an inspiring dialogue between oriental and occidental cultures.
For this, the Ensemble applies one of the original historical ideas of 300 years ago, namely that music gets adapted to the available instruments. For example the typical Baroque harpsichord in Ensemble is replaced by the qanūn as the Baroque continuo instrument, the Baroque violin plays in an Arabic song style and all are underpinned by oriental percussion bringing new rhythms to old dances. One can hear quartertones in an Arabic improvisation over a Baroque theme. This gives rise to surprising musical interactions and the different music styles merge into a new and exciting sound mix.
